The place opposite the ria Arousa, at the estuary of the river Umia, where the old pilgrims disembarked to continue their trip towards Santiago de Compostela was named Mar de Frades, a Galician phrase meaning 'Sea of Friars.'

That little corner in the ocean facing the vines was the location Mar de Frades chose in 1987 to build a bodega inspired by the manner of the Atlantic, with the objective of producing wines that reflected its personality and character.

Their history has always been intertwined with that of the D.O. Ras Baixas, which was established the following year. They were pioneers in the Val do Salnés, deepest winegrowing traditions, where the legend of Albario begins and Spain's most subtle and delicate white wines are created.
