Question by DLS: Would you please advise about Christmas gifts like liqueurs or wine, cognac?
1 * for people who cook
2 * for people who need a little something once in a while
3 * a lovely wine to keep in storage
4 * anything you think would be good to give for Christmas
5 * a question: would Cherry Heering replace
kirsch? I think I do not like kirsch. Therefore would not like to give it. But they use it in things like German Lebkuchen (Christmas cookies).
thank you so much

A rule of thumb I was taught was to only cook with it if you would drink it. Even though there are some inexpensive cooking wines and sherries, I always use whatever we have at our bar instead.
I’ll leave the wine question to some of the connoisseurs who frequent this board.
Kirsch is German for cherry, so the same type of overall flavors would be in Cherry Heering, though as brands vary it could taste different (for better or worse). I looked it up and saw that Heering is a higher end brand, though, so it should definitely be nicer than a generic bottle of kirshwasser.
