Isabeau Bonneau de Fonrocque, the daughter of Helie Bonneau, a squire and proprietor of the La Gaffelière and Fonrocque estates, was married to founder Louis de Malet, Lord of Roquefort, in 1705. The Malets came to Saint-Emilion through their marriage.
The first Louis-Alexandre started modernising La Gaffelière in 1910. He took around twenty years to completely replace the vineyard using more rational methods. He also adopted these rootstocks, the only estate still in use now, and they have subsequently multiplied.
He was succeeded by his son Léo in 1958. He passionately poured himself into managing the estate and establishing La Gaffelière's renown. The estate bottling for the 1962 vintage, green harvesting in 1985, and a new concrete wine cellar in 1990 were all part of his ongoing modernisation effort.
