Terms and Conditions of Use    

Use of the Great Wines Direct Group web sites are on condition you agree to the terms and conditions of Great Wines Direct which, from time to time, are subject to change and that any future use of the sites will renew such an agreement.

GreatWinesDirect.co.uk and its sister companies are UK based companies and any subsequent disputes or claims arising from the use of these sites must be made and settled under UK law.

Order Request

When you place an order with www.greatwinesdirect.co.uk, or its sister companies, www.buyfinewine.co.uk and www.buygreatwine.co.uk, it is treated as an order request. All the wines listed on the websites are subject to availability from the distribution warehouses. When you place an order request on the websites, we contact the warehouse to confirm availability and then arrange delivery.

To process an order request Great Wines Direct will perform a pre-authorisation request to credit / debit card issuer. This pre-authorisation confirms funds available and performs a security check on the billing address details to protect GreatWinesDirect.co.uk against credit /debit card fraud.

A legally binding contract only exists between you the purchaser and Great Wines Direct when the wine has been dispatched and the funds charged to your card.

Great Wines Direct make every effort to ensure the information listed on the website is accurate and up-to-date but there are times due to circumstances beyond our control when the vintage, description or price may change. We will always keep you informed of any changes made to your order request.

In accordance with UK law when you place an order request with Great Wines Direct you warrant that you are at least 18 years of age and that you are legally capable of entering into binding contracts.

Great Wines Direct reserves the right not to accept any orders and may cancel an order request up to the point of dispatch.


All prices quoted on the Great Wines Direct groups websites include duty and V.A.T. but do not include the delivery charge. The standard delivery charge is an additional £7.95 and applies to each delivery address.

While we try and ensure that all prices on the website are accurate, errors may sometimes occur. If we discover an error in the price of the goods you have ordered, we will inform you as soon as possible and give you the option of reconfirming your order at the correct price or cancelling it. If we are unable to contact you, we will treat the order as cancelled. All quotations whether written or verbal are treated as order requests and are subject to our terms and conditions as stated on the website.


Due to the nature of fine wine, very limited amounts are produced; sometimes as little as 8,000 bottles per vintage. Due to a certain wines popularity, this can sometimes lead to a vintage running out before our site is updated. In this event, either the new vintage will be sent in its place (if available) or we will contact you to ascertain what you wish to be done in the way of a replacement wine, or offer you the opportunity for a full refund. We always endeavour to keep the site updated, but with over 1,000 different wines this task can be challenging.

The Mailing List

When you register for an account with GreatWinesDirect.co.uk, buyfinewine.co.uk, or buygreatwine.co.uk, you are given a tick box option of “opting out” from the mailing list. The benefits of being on the mailing list includes, the email bulletin, discounts and special offers. You can change being part of the mailing list at any time by emailing service (at) greatwinesdirect.co.uk or by completing the >GDRP requestand you will be removed from the mailing list.


You agree to indemnify GreatWinesDirect.co.uk and its related companies, affiliates, employees, agents and representatives, and to hold them harmless from all reasonable damages, losses, taxes, duties, fees, expenses, claims and liabilities (including solicitors fees) ("Claims") that may arise from the use of the Great Wines Direct group websites.


Great Wines Direct warrant that the wines will be of satisfactory quality and fit for their general purpose.

Other than as stated elsewhere within the terms and conditions of the web site, all warranties conditions, terms and undertakings, expressed or implied, whether by statute, common law, custom, trade usage, course of dealings or otherwise in respect of the goods and services provided by us hereunder and hereby excluded to the fullest extent permitted by law. Nothing in this Agreement shall affect, exclude or limit your statutory rights as a consumer.

United Kingdom and EU Age Restriction

You must be aged 18 years old to purchase alcohol in the UK. By placing an order request you confirm you are at least 18 years old. If you are buying the wine as a gift then the recipient must be 18 years old. All goods must be signed for on delivery by an adult aged 18 years or over. If no one of that age is at the address when the delivery is attempted the goods will be retained by the driver, in which case the driver will leave notification of attempted delivery.

The carrier will leave a card explaining they have called and they will re-attempt to deliver the wine at the next available opportunity. If the parcel is not delivered on the second attempt, then another calling card will be left explaining the carrier has attempted a second delivery and the customer must get in touch with our office to arrange a convenient time to re deliver. If contact is not received within the next 7 days the goods will be returned to the warehouse and the customer will then be responsible for collecting the parcel from our warehouse at their own expense.


By using our sites you accept that it is at your own risk.


The standard delivery charge is £7.95 and applies to each and every delivery address.
Please check all deliveries BEFORE signing drivers receipt.


Great Wines Direct consider your satisfaction with our products and service to be paramount. If you do wish to return any products to Great Wines Direct the order will be treated as a cancellation unless it is for the reason defined below.

If the product is delivered damaged or the wrong product is sent in error, please contact our customer service department and we will arrange for a replacement to be dispatched as soon as possible and for the damaged/wrong goods to be collected. If that wine is no longer available, we will offer an alternative product or give you the opportunity of a refund.


You may, if you wish for whatever reason, cancel your order. The cancellation period is up to 7 working days from the day after you have received your "unwanted wine". The bottles should remain unopened and intact. You can contact us on 01293 734 664 or you can send an email to service (at) greatwinesdirect.co.uk

We will reimburse all monies for the wine within 28 days from the date you notify us of the cancellation. The wines will to be returned to us at the customers cost. If the wines are not returned we will arrange collection and the collection cost will be deducted from your refund. Failure to return the wines, or make available for collection the customer is in breach of a statutory duty.

When a customer cancels an order you shall be under a duty to restore the wines to Great Wines Direct. You must retain and store the wines in good condition until we can arrange collection and the cost of collection will be deducted from your refund.

If you fail to make the goods available for collection within 30 days of your notice of cancellation, you will be deemed to have accepted the goods, at which point a new purchase contract will be made and you will be charged for your order at the price set out on the web site.

Quality and Condition

The Great Wines Direct group are committed to providing wines that are stored correctly and from reputable sources. However there is always an element of risk in the purchase of the older fine wines as their condition is inevitably variable. Once the wine has been delivered and the statutory 7 days “cooling down” period has passed. It is then deemed to be your responsibility for the continued safe storage of the wines purchased.

Wines that have been simply kept too long or mistreated will not be refunded. Incident's of “corked” wine will be resolved on an individual basis and at the discretion of Great Wines Direct

If you believe a wine to be faulty please retain the liquid and contact us on 01293 734 664 or email us at service (at) GreatWinesDirect.co.uk and we will be happy to make arrangements to have the wine collected and tested. Our customer service is very important to us and we will resolve each incident on an individual basis, keeping you informed throughout the whole process.

Voucher Codes

The Vouchers only apply to goods purchased on the GreatWinesDirect.co.uk, buyfinewine.co.uk and buygreatwine.co.uk websites.
The Vouchers may not be used by any Great Wines Direct employee.
The Vouchers cannot be applied to past orders made with Great Wines Direct and cannot be backdated or redeemed for cash.
Each Voucher code may be used only once per household at any one delivery address.
Great Wines Direct reserves the right to withdraw or terminate any of its Vouchers at any time, either as a whole or for specific delivery areas. If this happens, then the Vouchers may not be used for any orders placed after the date of withdrawal or termination.
Great Wines Direct reserves the right to reject the use of a Voucher where fraud is suspected.

The right to use a voucher code is personal to the intended recipient / recipients and may not be transferred. No voucher code may be copied, reproduced, distributed, or published directly or indirectly in any form. Our voucher codes must not be stored in a data retrieval system, without the prior written permission of Great Wines Direct. Voucher codes distributed or circulated without the written approval of Great Wines Direct, for example on an Internet message board or on a "bargains" website, are not valid for use and will be refused or cancelled.
