Joseph Bou Sleiman, a fourth-generation family winemaker, crafts Old World and New World fusion wines in his contemporary winery in the village of Mtein. His Chateau Oumsiyat estate, which is located more than 1,000 metres above sea level in the Beqaa Valley of Lebanon, oversees 78 hectares of grapes, including a planting of Assyrtiko.
His vineyards are located in a valley that is bordered to the west and east by Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains. The region has a 20 °C diurnal temperature difference in the summer, which promotes a longer ripening period. The majority of the soils in this area are calcareous clay, a cold soil with exceptional water retention that is essential for feeding the vines throughout the scorching summers.
Environment-friendly practises are followed when cultivating and cane-pruning vines. Only when the grapes are at their peak maturity is hand harvesting done.
