The flavour of gin ( pron. dʒɪn), a distilled alcoholic beverage, comes from juniper berries and other botanical ingredients.

Gin was first created as a medicinal beverage by monks and alchemists in various parts of Europe. Then, in Flanders and the Netherlands, the contemporary gin was altered to produce aqua vita using grape and grain distillates. After that, it started to be sold in the spirits sector.

After the arrival of jenever, a Dutch and Belgian beverage that was originally a medication, gin gained popularity in England.

Although this trend had been developing since the early 17th century, gin only really took off following William of Orange's Glorious Revolution in 1688 and the ensuing import restrictions on French brandy.

Later, gin became England's national alcoholic drink.
