The oldest estate in South Africa is Groot Constantia, which is also one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

In the foothills of Table Mountain, Cape Governor Simon van der Stel established a property that he named Constantia in 1685. Napoleon, Bismarck, and King Louis Philippe of France, who was the winery's largest single customer, all praised Groot Constantia in public.

After phylloxera decimated the vines, they were forced to sell to the government of Cape Town.

The current estate has a total area of 165 hectares, of which 87 hectares are planted, and is situated between 60 and 280 metres above sea level. The region's typically chilly environment produces wines that are rich and well-balanced.

Shiraz, Merlot, and the blended red Gouverneurs Reserve are among the fine red wines produced in Groot Constantia that are highly renowned. In 2003, for the first time since the 1880s, the estate started making Grand Constance, a dessert wine from the Constantia region.
