Quinta da Lixa, owned and run by the Meireles family of Vila da Lixa since the mid-1980s, began as a cellar-door dealer of what the locals affectionately referred to as o tal vinho da Lixa - "that Lixa wine."
The family was foresighted in collecting estate vineyard acreage early on and over the years, assuring an increasingly steady supply of high-quality and comparatively low-cost estate-grown grapes.
In the 1990s, a new winery was built to transform the family business from bulk local-market sales to estate bottling.
In the early 2000s, another piece of the puzzle was finished with the hiring of Carlos Teixeira, a local who had left town to become one of Portugal's most famous oenologists. He is still at the helm of this well-known winery, making textbook Vinhos Verdes at an unrivalled level of excellence at the very low price.
