Two friends and business partners had the idea to start Akrathos in 2007. Babis Bekris had an ambition to create wine in the Chalkidiki mountains because he was reared in a family of winemakers in Messinia.
Nassos Felonis, a well-known lawyer from Athens who had a desire to promote fresh endeavours in Greece, played a crucial role in making Akrathos's vision a reality. Together, they worked to establish vines in a location that would allow for the easy production of great wines.
The relationship grew as a result of the assistance of more friends, notably Mark Rachovides from London and Costas Polyzogopoulos from Athens. All are eminent professionals in fields other than wine production, but they all have a deep affection for Greece and fine wine.
Their top priority has always been the creation of exceptional Greek native varietal wines that showcase superior terroir.
After extensive and focused investigation, the suitable location was found in Chalkidiki, in the municipality of Aristotle, in northern Greece. The name Akrathos was chosen for the winery in honour of this heritage since it felt opportune to build a winery so near to the location of the famous 'Akanthos' wine's inception.
The initial 5 hectares, with a 600 metre elevation, were bought in 2008. The complicated slate subsoil, the temperate meridian currents, the chilly nighttime winds from the surrounding mountains, and the sea breeze from the nearby gulfs of Ierissos and Mount Athos all work together to produce the best grapes possible.
