The wine grape variety called Carmenere was first cultivated in the Medoc region of Bordeaux, France, where it was used to make deep crimson wines and occasionally for blending with Petit Verdot.

The name 'Carmenere' comes from the French word for crimson (carmin), which refers to the bright crimson colour of the autumn foliage just before leaf-fall.

Carmenere is a member of the Cabernet family of grapes. Although current European Union restrictions forbid imports under this name into the European Union, the grape is also known as Grande Vidure, a historical Bordeaux synonym

Carmenere is one of the original six red grapes of Bordeaux, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
