Thomas Barton, an Irishman, travelled from Ireland to the Bordeaux region in 1722 and started a prosperous trade business there. This is when Château Léoville Barton's history really began.
In 1826, his grandson acquired Château Langoa and a portion of the Léoville estate. Anthony Barton, the current owner, produces two wines, Château Léoville Barton and Château Langoa-Barton, and resides in the stunning 18th-century Château Langoa.
At Chateau Léoville-Barton, he now owns 51 hectares of vineyard space that is tucked between Chateau Talbot and the Gironde. They feature gravelly soils over thick clay, which is typical of St. Julien terroir.
The region's traditional, Cabernet-dominated wine is reflected in the plantings, which are 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.
