Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino established the Conterno Fantino winery in 1982.
Currently, they grow vines on 27 hectares of land, producing 140,000 bottles annually, divided among the four varietals Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Chardonnay. Alda, Fabio, and Elisa Fantino eventually joined the two founders in various capacities.
The guiding principles in their vineyards, which are organically grown (according to CCPB certification), are environmental sustainability, biodiversity preservation, respect for the land, and its legacy. The 2008 winery expansion included several technological advancements with the purpose of energy conservation in order to further reduce their environmental impact such as geothermal energy, solar energy, and lastly the utilisation of wetlands created especially for the purpose of wastewater treatment.
The Conterno Fantino winery crafts its wines with the main objective of reflecting its own identity, from the painstaking manual selection of fruit to the hand-harvesting using small crates; from preserving the aromas of the vineyard with spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts (commercial yeast is not used here); from the careful use of wood for the ageing of the wines to the minimal use of sulfites, right up to the bottle ageing.
The most natural route for them is this one, despite its complexity. "Our wine is the offspring of the land in which the wines are cultivated, and once in the winery must be brought up, step by step, as if it were a member of the family. Our wine is one of us" - Guido Fantino
