Muscat is the grape with the greatest 'grapey' flavour. Moscatels of many types, including Muscat de Frontignan, which may be superior than Muscat d'Alexandria, are widely produced throughout the Mediterranean to produce sweet whites that can either be made naturally sweet or fortified to keep their sweetness.

When aged in barrels, Muscat becomes strong and orangey, giving it a fantastic partner for chocolate. It produces a wonderful grape-flavoured sparkling white in northern Italy, while dry Muscats from France (Alsace and Languedoc) are particularly recommended.

Muscat wines are distinguished by their high monoterpene concentration, which produces these intensely scented, "grapey" flavours and aromas.

Moscato is the name given to Muscat wines in Italy, and Moscatel in Iberia. There are many different types of wine produced in these nations, such as the endearing Italian Asti Spumante, Muscat d'Alsace, and sweet wines with a high alcohol content.
