A red wine grape varietal is called Petite Sirah (Durif). It is referred to as Petite Sirah in the Americas and as Durif in the rest of the world. It bears the name of Dr. Francois Durif who found it in Rhone in 1880. This novel grape was produced when a Peloursin vine was crossed with a Syrah plant.

Australia (especially in Riverina and Riverland), California (Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa, Monterey, and San Joaquin County), Yakima River Valley (Washington), Ontario's Niagara Peninsula, France, and Israel are the main countries where it is grown.

Petite Sirah is known for having high tannins and acidity, which give it excellent ageing potential. In the past, it was employed as a blending component to give weaker wines weight and structure.

Blackberry, chocolate, and black pepper flavours are present in the flavour profile along with licorice and herbal undertones that are more subdued.

Recently, there has been a resurgence of Petite Sirah in serious mixes, single-varietal bottles, and as the primary variety.
