The strong wines made from the Italian red grape primitivo have mellow flavours of blackberry, dark chocolate, and liquorice. It originated in Croatia but discovered its true home on the Puglian limestone plateaus. Primitivo thrives in California, where it is known as Zinfandel, in the New World.

On the Salento peninsula, between the Adriatic and Ionian seas, there are several DOC, DOCG, and IGT zones that are especially devoted to Primitivo. Salento IGT covers the entirety of Taranto, Brindisi, and Lecce, whereas Primitivo di Manduria DOC covers the southern regions of the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi.

Primitivo is used to make red blends as well as single-varietal wines, adding body and alcohol. Additionally, it may be found in sumptuous fortified wines like Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale and delicate rosato (rosé) wines with aromas of fresh summer fruit.

And if you're asking 'what does Primitivo mean' it means 'early ripening' rather than 'primitive'!
