Vodka is a transparent distilled alcoholic beverage. Various strains originated in Poland, Russia, and Sweden. Vodka is primarily made up of water and ethanol, although it may also contain contaminants and flavourings.

It has traditionally been produced by distilling fluids from fermented cereal grains and potatoes, which were brought into Europe in the 1700s. As a foundation, some current brands employ corn, sugar cane, fruits, honey and maple sap.

Standard vodkas have been 40% alcohol by volume (ABV) (80 U.S. proof) since the 1890s. The European Union has set a minimum alcohol concentration for vodka of 37.5%. In the United States, vodka must contain at least 40% alcohol.
