Montepulciano was the second most planted red grape varietal in Italy at the beginning of the 1990's, just after Sangiovese, due to the character of the wines it produces, which are quite approachable and adaptable, as well as the variety's dependability.

It is well-known and prized for its qualities, including its aromas, colours, and gentle tannins and so, as a result, it is used in various ratios to make roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG designations, as well as numerous other blends and wines on its own.

The most well-known Montepulciano wines and our favourite type, originate in Abruzzo, the central region of Italy, where it is produced everywhere under the 'Montepulciano d'Abruzzo' designation, from the Apennine mountains to the Adriatic coast. The Colline Teramane is the sole DOCG wine made from Montepulciano grapes; all other wines are DOCs. The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo (similar to a rose wine) is likewise made from grapes from the Montepulciano variety.

The Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno, both from Marche, are two additional significant central Italian wines whose primary grape is Montepulciano.
