Negroamaro, one of the most popular red types from southern Italy, is thought to be an import from the Adriatic, along with many other southern Italian reds.
This grape variety is known for its dark skin and has at least 1,500 years of history in southern Italy's Puglia area. Primitivo, Malvasia Nera, Sangiovese, or Montepulciano are the grapes that are most frequently included in a blend with it.

Dark berry fruit flavours, medium-full tannins, and a deep colour make Negroamaro a desirable wine.

The variety can also offer earthy undertones that can transition into flavours that are just a little bit medicinal. It has a light scent and can be used to make complex wines that exhibit clove, cinnamon, and other ground brown spice flavours.

The best Negroamaro wines, especially those made under the Salice Salentino DOC designation, are arguably produced on the Salento Peninsula in Puglia. The region's mild, Mediterranean-style climate is ideal for this type and enables the vines to develop to their full potential.

It is a fairly drought-resistant cultivar and is rarely hampered by the region's scant rainfall. Local viticulturists are even more fond of it because it consistently produces great results allowing for a constantly high quality and similar great wines, year on year.
