Abadia Retuerta's Syrah is a single vineyard wine from their low yielding vines in Sardon de Duero The wine has an intense dark purple hue and a peppery nose with hints of warm beetroot, freshly turned earth and forest fruits The full bodied palate has aromatic notes of violet and smoke that accompany the concentrated fruit flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and plum The silky tannins provide an excellent balance to the intense, creamy textures of this seductive wine

A savoury, cedary, chocolatey nose is followed by a lovely, satisfying completeness, reminiscent of mature Chateauneuf du Pape A surprisingly subtle and nuanced wine - particularly for the Barossa - it has lovely, savoury, gamey, woody complexity, and an impressively sustained finish It also has restrained alcohol for the region (just over 14%, when 15%+ is the norm), as well as fresh, balancing acidity Both alcohol and acidity do their job, but neither sticks out: the overall effect is integrated, harmonious, beautifully-balanced and effortlessly drinkable!

It is rumoured that the inventor of the Stump Jump plough, which enabled a ploughshare to 'jump' over tree roots (or stumps), had poor eyesight and required regular tests to ensure he could still operate machinery The design of this label is inspired by an optometrist's eyechart and serves as a makeshift sobriety test If you can hold the bottle at arm's length and still read the front label, you can enjoy another glass The nose is chock-full of fresh blackberries, cherries and dark chocolate sprinkled with spices The palate is fresh and juicy, ripe red fruits mix with plums, blackcurrant, flowers and a twist of black pepper The tannins are fine with d'Arenberg's trademark earthiness helping keep this easy going wine in check
