The white grape type known as torrontes is mostly grown and known in Argentina. It produces crisp, aromatic wines with a moderate amount of acidity, a smooth texture and mouthfeel, and characteristic scents of peach and apricot.

In Argentina, there are three different types of torrontes: the most popular is torrontes Riojano, followed by torrontes Sanjuanino, and torrontes Mendocino.

The majority of Argentine wines simply labelled 'Torrontes' are made from the Torrontes Riojano variety, which has gained popularity for the quality of its wines.

Recently, plantings in the extremely high altitudes (1700m+) of the Calchaquies Valleys in Argentina's far north have been successful. Despite making up less than 10% of all white grape plantings, the vine is extremely productive, and contributes to nearly 20% of all white wines sold in Argentina.

Given that the grape grows best in chilly, dry, windy circumstances, the Salta area in northwest Argentina is particularly renowned for its Torrontes.
