One of the most prominent companies producing and trading in Port are Barros Port who have recently celebrated their 100th year in business.

Manoel de Almeida established Barros in Vila Nova de Gaia's port centre just recently, in 1913. Their port is produced using grapes from the Quinta de So Luz vineyards in the Douro, under the direction of Chief Winemaker Carlos Alves.

Barros' vineyards, which are regarded as some of the most emblematic of the Douro area, also produce DOC Douro wines, dry wines that are characterised as being "fresh, soft, and full of harmonious elegance."

Their incredible Colheita Ports, which are old Tawnies from a single year that have been aged in casks for at least seven years, have contributed significantly to their popularity. They have now become recognised as the leading manufacturer of Colheita Ports thanks to their experience in this genre.

Prior to being hand-bottled to order, Barros lets its Colheita Ports mature in cask. Compared to bottle ageing, the amount of wine lost to evaporation, known quaintly as the "Angel's Share," is far larger. They are willing to make this sacrifice since it enables them to produce Colheita wines of unmatched excellence.
