Randall Grahm realised early on that he would have much more success producing more distinctive and creative wines working with Rhône types in the Central Coast of California. In contrast, Bonny Doon Vineyard began with the (in retrospect) stupid attempt to recreate Burgundy in California.

The most important lesson here was that blended wines are typically the most successful in a warm, Mediterranean climate—something that was fortunate but somewhat accidental.

The first vintage (1984) of Le Cigare Volant, a tribute to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, was produced by Bonny Doon Vineyard in 1986, and it continues to be the winery's flagship/starship brand.
