During the 19th century, Château Rauzan-Ségla and Mouton Rothschild were regarded as the top 2emé Cru Classé Bordeaux estates. The 20th century saw Mouton's fortunes flourish, culminating in its elevation to 1er Cru status in 1973, while Rauzan-Ségla's reputation declined and a string of underwhelming wines were made.

The resurgence started when the Rauzan-Segla was sold in the early 1980s. The renowned Professor Peynaud was hired as a consultant, and the amount of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and new oak utilised in the maturation process were both increased. A brand-new cuverie was constructed in 1986.

In the middle to late 1980s and the early 1990s, Rauzan-Ségla produced a number of standout wines. Chanel acquired Rauzan-Segla in 1994
