Pietro De Martino, an Italian immigrant who migrated to Chile from his home Abruzzo with the hope of creating fashionable wines, created De Martino in 1934.

In the alluvial soils and Mediterranean climate of Isla de Maipo, not far from the nation's capital, Santiago, he discovered the ideal location. The company is still family-owned and is currently handled by Sebastián De Martino, fourth generation, and Marco Antonio, third generation.

De Martino is an inventor; in 1996, they branded and exported Chile's first Carmenere. They established the standard for the Chilean wine industry by using century-old vines cultivated in the Itata Valley and using traditional winemaking methods. 

De Martino farm their 350 separate vineyard sites totaling more than 300 hectares of vines using organic methods. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Semillon are produced in Maipo, where the Mediterranean temperature is softened by the influence of the Pacific Ocean, on alluvial terraces with a lot of gravel. Syrah is grown on colluvial soils in Choapa, where the continental climate is moderated by the Andes Mountains.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are grown in the cool coastal Limar on calcareous clay. Sauvignon Blanc is grown in decomposed granite with some clay in a nearby region called Casablanca. Chardonnay is cultivated on clay soils in the Malleco Valley, which is also chilly and coastal.

Old dry-farmed vineyards in coastal Itata have Muscat and are heavily impacted by the Pacific Ocean.
