Domaine des Forges vineyards are situated on schist and carboniferous soils, that identify some of the best parcels in the area, in the commune of St Aubin de Luigné, south of Angers in the western Loire Valley.

Due to the schist's ability to hold heat, ripening is facilitated in this northern, chilly climate. The grapes produced by the vines, which have an average age of 40 years and yields that rarely exceed 25 hectolitres per hectare, have concentrated juice and are very flavourful.

The vineyard is sustainably grown; the rows are interspersed with grass, and hand green picking and summer thinning are used to guarantee that the grapes are exposed to sunlight and ripen.

In order to choose just the ripest and best fruit at the start of the noble rot, botrytis cinerea, the hand-harvest is picked in triages. The noble rot, which consumes the water from the grapes and leaves a great concentration of sugar, flavour, and acidity in the berries, thrives in the misty mornings and dry, sunny days.
