The 70-hectare estate, which is close to the quaint, mediaeval Alsatian village of Riquewihr, is still run by the Dopff family, who have been producing wine there since 1574.

The vineyards are located on the foothills of the lower Vosges mountain range, more than 300 metres above sea level. They established the use of the stemmed wine bottles, which today set Alsace wines apart from those from other areas, as pioneers.

Tenth generation Julien Dopff was so inspired by the Champagne tastings at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 that he spent two years learning the craft of winemaking there before returning to Alsace.

Julien Dopff was certain that a Crémant made from regional grape varietals and showcasing the terroir of Alsace should be produced and preserved after World War II. Together with five other producers, he ultimately succeeded in getting Crémant d'Alsace recognised as an AOC in 1976.
