Weingut JJ Leitz has achieved the reputation of being one of Rheingau's top growers and, moreover, one of Germany's greatest producers under the guidance of Johannes Leitz. Since taking over his family estate in 1985, Johannes has expanded his holdings from 2.6 hectares to over 40 hectares, the majority of which are Grand Cru locations on the Rüdesheimer Berg.
The estate vineyards of Leitz are located entirely on the Rüdesheimer Berg, a steep, south-facing hillside of exceedingly ancient slate and quartzite planted entirely to riesling and containing the Grand Crus of Schlossberg, Rottland, and Roseneck.
Leitz trains his vines in a single-cane, cordon system to improve fruit quality and character, in contrast to the majority of Rheingau growers, who have traditionally prioritised yield using a double-cane system.
Johannes is a staunch believer that the vigneron's most important labour takes place in the vineyards. The arduous hours of labour on the ultra-steep hills allow these historic vines to realise their full potential, with a focus on growing as responsibly as possible and working by hand.
