Lockwood Vineyard was created with the premise that a world-class estate-produced wine may be produced with the right vineyard location and superior winemaking. It was first made available in 1989.
The 1,850-acre San Lucas Vineyard was first planted by Lockwood Vineyard's founders, Paul Toeppen, Phil Johnson, and Butch Lindley, who together have over 90 years of experience managing vineyards. They did this after determining that the property was ideal for cultivating premium grapes. One of the largest premium estate vineyards in the world, the vineyard is located in an isolated region situated at the foot of the Santa Lucia mountain range in Monterey County. Lockwood Vineyard is still committed to creating top-notch estate produced wines under the new ownership of Boisset Family Estates.
Each vine's unique needs are taken into account when designing viticultural practises for the vineyard blocks. An altered VSP system is used to spur prune and trellis the vines. Sustainable techniques like shoot thinning, cover cropping, deficit watering, and cluster removal are used. The US Geological Survey acknowledged the vineyard's distinctive and extraordinary soil in 1946. The "Lockwood Shaly Loam" gives the high-end wines an exclusive flavour because it is only found in two tiny locations of Central California. It is made up of crushed fossilised seashells and is akin to chalk and limestone.
