Miles Madeira is one of the oldest and most prestigious brands of Madeira wine in the world. It was first established in 1814 on Madeira Island under the name Rutherford and Grant.

Henry Price Miles travelled to Madeira from Wales in 1856 while still a baby with his mother. He gained thorough understanding and practical expertise of the workings of the Madeira trade while working as James Rutherford's apprentice starting when he was 12 years old.

Due to Phylloxera, which destroyed the majority of Madeira's vineyards, the Rutherfords departed for London in 1872 and established a wine importing company in the Old Trinity House in Waterlane. Miles decided to buy the business and the stocks as a result.
