Nebbiolo, an Italian red wine grape variety, is primarily known for producing the DOCG wines of Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Gattinara, Carema, and Ghemme in its native Piemonte area.

Nebia, which means 'fog' in Italian, is supposed to be the source of the name 'Nebbiolo' which means 'Nebbiolo wine'

The Langhe region, home to numerous Nebbiolo vines, experiences a thick, heavy fog during harvest, which typically begins in late October.
Alternative explanations for its name focus on the glaucous veil that develops over the berries as they mature, or they suggest that the term may actually be derived from the Italian word 'nobile', which means noble.

Nebbiolo produces light-coloured red wines with rose petal and tar aromas that can be rather tannic when young. The wines develop a distinctive brick-orange hue around the glass rim as they age and open up to diverse flavours and aromas like violets, tar, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, tobacco, and prunes.

Years of ageing may be necessary for Nebbiolo wines to balance the tannins with other flavours, so don't be afraid to leave the odd bottle in your wine rack to return to it a while later to see how it has developed..
