History abounds at the famed Schloss Johannisberg, possibly starting with Charlemagne, the Roman emperor, giving the orders to grow the vineyards!

Schloss Johannisberg was the world's first Riesling Estate and an important figure in wine history. It was planted exclusively with Riesling grapes in 1720. Here, in 1775, "noble rot"-affected late-picked grapes were used to create the Spätlese quality.

The estate introduced Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese to the wine world in 1787 as a result of this discovery.

Schloss Johannisberg is one of the few German vineyards that is not required to carry a village name on the label. It is a single vineyard appellation in its own right.
