When Koen Roose acquired Spioenkop in 2000, he integrated the roles of founder, owner, winemaker, and viticulturist into one. Formerly a student of engineering, he decided to follow his love of wine and became a certified sommelier. He nourished his goal of starting a vineyard in the cool-climate region of Elgin after working vintages in South Africa and Burgundy.
After being planted in 2007, Koen's ideal of dry farming—low intervention, devoid of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides—became a reality. The Spioenkop Battle, which took place in 1900 during the Anglo-Boer War, inspired the farm's name.
Since Roose has a passion for history, he decided to keep the name. Appropriately, Spioenkop is now writing its own history by producing wines that have won awards and has been given First Growth designation by Tim Atkin MW in 2020 and 2021.
