Robert Talbott, the creator of a high-end silk tie manufacturer, first encountered and fell in love with French good wines in 1950. He had a fantasy of producing his own Californian wines one day utilising the Burgundian methods he had come to love.
Meanwhile, in the cool-climate region of the Santa Lucia Highlands, the fabled Sleepy Hollow Vineyard was originally planted in 1972. Robert and his son Robb accomplished their dream in 1982 and opened Talbott Vineyards. To become an estate winery, they bought the Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in 1994.
For thirty years, both wine aficionados and critics have consistently praised their wines. In a rare retrospective tasting in 1997, Wine Spectator awarded the Sleepy Hollow Chardonnay's 1990 vintage a perfect 100 points.
