In 1951, Aldo Olivier Gramola was 12 years old when he and his family fled the economic struggles of postwar Italy for Chile's Elqui Valley. When he was older, he began farming grapes for the production of Pisco.

After speaking with his Italian winemaker cousin Giorgio Flessati a few years later, he discovered that the Elqui Valley had the potential to create high-quality wines. So, in 1998, Via Falernia was established, ushering in a completely new wine region for Chile.

Via Falernia today contains 320 hectares of grapes dispersed throughout the valley, each with its own unique climate characteristics.

Giorgio Flessati has been the winemaker at Via Falernia since its inception in 1998. Flessati, who hails from the northern Italian area of Trento, has international winemaking experience but chose to settle in Chile after seeing the promise of the Elqui Valley on a visit there in the late 1990s.
