William Burgoyne and John Jackson, two Englishmen, established Burgoyne & Jackson in northern Portugal as a general trade firm that exported wines, olive oil, and fruit while importing dried cod and English woollen goods. The partnership was first established in 1703 when the Matthew granted extra privileges to non-Portuguese merchants.
The name of the corporation altered over time as new partners were added; in 1718, Mr. John Clark wed Miss Prudence Burgoyne. Following his marriage, the business was known as John Clark; by 1723, it had changed to Clark & Thornton; and in 1729, with the arrival of the first Warre in Portugal, it became Messrs. Clark, Thornton & Warre. William Warre was born in India in 1706, where his parents and grandfather had lived for a long time.
The total port shipments for 1791 show that Warre's had advanced to become one of the top businesses by the end of the 18th century. A little over 30,000 port pipes were exported by 21 companies in that year, with Warre & Sons accounting for 2,937 of those pipes, or 10% of the total.
